15 Sonoma County leaders take the Week Without Driving Pledge!
Sonoma County isn’t known for its public transit activism but we’re working on changing that. As part of that effort, the newly formed North Bay Transit Riders celebrated the beginning of the national Week Without Driving on Saturday, Sept 27th at the Sonoma Clean Power Customer Service Center!
The goal of the week is for elected officials, decision-makers, and community members to experience firsthand the barriers faced by those who can’t drive due to age, disability, income, or personal choice. To help people with trip planning, the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition, Sonoma County Transit, Santa Rosa City Bus, Golden Gate Transit and Sonoma County Transportation and Climate Authority had info tables at the kickoff party
Over 220 Sonoma County residents signed the petition asking their leaders to participate in the national Week Without Driving and 15 Sonoma County leaders took the pledge! Special thanks to:
For committing to take the Week Without Driving challenge! Going a Week Without Driving is tough in our county as destinations are spread out from each other and public transit is limited. The current state of our infrastructure and transit investment makes essential activities almost impossible without a car. Night classes at the Junior College? Bus service ends before night classes get out. Soccer practice for your high schooler? Dangerous bike routes along busy roads. Commuting between towns? Bus service once an hour.
That is exactly why it’s important for county leaders to see first hand what it’s like for the people for whom every week is a week without driving in Sonoma County.
All week long, we ask these leaders to think about the trips that they are taking that are easy to replace by transit, walking, or biking and to think about the trips that don’t work without a car. What would make it easier to replace car driving with other ways to get around for those trips, and how can they as leaders in Sonoma County help to create that change?
And for Sonoma County residents, take a moment to email one or more of these officials thanking them for taking the Week Without Driving Challenge and stepping up their support for public transit, bike infrastructure and walkable communities
We’ll be collecting their experiences throughout the week and sharing their insights with the community on social media, so check out North Bay Transit Riders on Instagram via Transbay Coalition to see what our leaders discover!
